MISSION
In response to a proposal made by the First Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, Pope Paul VI established the International Theological Commission on 11 April 1969, in connection with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He approved its statutes ad experimentum and subsequently appointed its members.
The Commission’s task is to assist the Holy See, particularly the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, in examining doctrinal questions of greater importance.
The Commission consists of theologians from diverse schools and countries who are distinguished for their expertise and fidelity to the Church’s Magisterium. The members, which number no more than 30, are nominated by the Holy Father ad quinquennium after having been proposed by the Cardinal Prefect of the Dicastery and after consultation with the Bishops’ Conferences.
The Commission convenes in assemblea plenaria at least once a year, although it can also work through subcommittees. The results of its studies are presented to the Holy Father and submitted to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith for its use.
With the Motu proprio Tredecim anni of 6 August 1982, Pope John Paul II promulgated the definitive statues of the Commission.
